Chapter 26

Monday Night

Vincent was getting fidgety. And that wasn’t something he often was, or that he enjoyed.

He considered himself a successful man, but turning his nose up at a ten million dollar pay day wasn’t something he was intent on doing.

His knee bounced furiously as he sat behind his desk, trying to focus on one of his other projects, but failing miserably to do so. The painting had obsessed him.

Ramona in Summer. All he had to look at was a photograph taken in the sixties ready for the auction. The quality was fine, but not great. And yet the beauty of the painting was clear as day. There was a fluidity to the style, a muted, understated sophistication to the colour theory. The subject was perfect. Beautiful and delicate, bathed in sunlight so rich and vivid you could feel it on your own skin while you looked upon the work.

He had to have it.

Throughout the day the sky had morphed from a flat grey sheet to a turbulent and bruised mass. Rain began to fall in sporadic droplets, pattering the windows. And then, as darkness gathered, the rain grew heavier until it thundered on the roof of the house.

More than twenty-four hours had now passed since Chief Gaines had dropped in on him. And though he hadn’t come back, Vincent couldn’t help but feel like Gaines was edging closer to the truth, despite what Pascal assured him.

And then there was Pascal. He’d never doubted her abilities before; but she’d never had such a large task before. But that was the thing – it wasn’t a large task. Lucky Caldwell was a measly teenager, and Pascal was a professional. She was capable, physically, mentally and emotionally. She was able to do what was necessary and wasn’t bound by silly notions of right or wrong. She’d shown that numerous times. Hell, it’s why he’d hired her in the first place. She knew where the bodies were buried because she was the one who’d buried them. She’d threatened, extorted, bribed and committed a whole host of other dubious acts to help plant Vincent’s heels on the throats of his competition. And she’d done it with efficient grace. He admired the woman, though he’d never tell her that.

And yet, this task? Maybe it was too much? No, no, he couldn’t hurry her. He had to have faith. Patience. It was a virtue a man should have, patience. Good things come to those who wait.

The sound of the Camaro firing up outside startled him.

He rose from behind the desk quickly. Bryson was under strict instructions not to leave the house until Vincent gave him the go ahead. And he knew not to defy his father.

Vincent charged through the house and out the front door just as Bryson was backing into the street, his headlights cutting through the falling rain. Vincent hadn’t realised quite how late it was, how dark it had grown until that moment.

As Bryson came to a halt and jammed the car into
